The question I get regularly is, will I get in trouble when I am active online as an employee of this company? Does it make my employer uncertain if I am completing my work? Does it make them insecure when I am out there promoting myself on LinkedIn, Facebook, my own blog, Twitter, my website, etc.?
The truth is simple. Employers want their employees to be visible to the public domain. It’s advertising that they employee great people. It is very rare that I find an employer upset at their employee because they posted information online about the work they are doing or what they do. Especially in Architecture and Engineering. A project won and built is something they want everyone to know and see. Take Fox Architects for instance. This inspired group of folks publicly shares who they have on staff, ask each of their employees to participate with their online presence, and continuously ask for their employees and outsiders to participate with their online design magazine, WorkSpace. It verifies them as being the experts both by people and ideas. Dont’ worry, promote yourself and your company; the boss will appreciate it.
