OK guys and gals. This week, we are going to cover putting together a Projects List. This is specific for Architects and Engineers who are entertaining the idea of leaving their firm and want future employers to learn more about their background and capabilities as a Design Architect/Engineer. Recently and typically, we’ve seen potential candidates send their resume in the form of a Projects List.
When we get candidates, we like to see three documents from them:
-
Cover letter (well written, concise and tailored for the audience)
-
Resume (not an RFP resume or 10 page resume, a resume (see resume writing tips )
-
Projects List and/or portfolio (portfolio tips and tricks will be posted in next weeks edition of our blog)
Projects List should come in either a .doc or a .xls (preferred). In this document, the candidate should provide:
-
Any and every project they have done that they can recollect (big or small)
-
Segregated by the type of project i.e. government, educational, mission critical, civic, etc.
-
Each project should have the Project Name, location, client, type, square footage, role that you played on that project, and which phase of the project you participated in (SD, DD, CD, CA, LEED, etc.)
-
All information is fact, if you don’t remember…that’s OK, leave it blank.
PROJECT NAME | LOCATION | CLIENT | TYPE | SQ FT | ROLE | SD | DD | CD | CA |
XYZ Project | Washington, DC | AE Firm | Interior | 8,450 | Mechanical Designer | x | |||
ABC Project | Baltimore, MD | Federal agency | Base Building | 6,742 | Drafter | x | x |
This will give future employers a quick snapshot of what you have done and what role you played. You are more than permitted to include featured projects on your resume; however we do not recommend you put this extensive list of projects on the resume. Having a detailed projects list for a prospective employer to review during an interview can spark conversation and a commonality with very little effort on your part. Putting in the time before you start interviewing can make the interview process that much easier.
Happy writing,
DFS
